My name is Lilith Maclin and if you suffer from a digestive disorder, you can find a wealth of information about this type of medical condition in my blog. Three years ago, my husband was having severe stomach cramps and his doctor told him that he had a digestive disorder called ulcerative colitis. After my husband was diagnosed, I did thorough research to learn how to control and manage this disorder. We kept track of everything that my husband ate and when a certain food caused a flare-up of his condition, he eliminated that food from his diet. By learning all we could about this digestive disorder, my husband has been able to live pain free. If you want more information about this disorder and how to manage it, you can find it here by reading my blog.

If you have always wanted to travel once you retire, you may be surprised to learn that your medicare insurance will not cover your medical care when you are outside of the United States. If you plan on doing any traveling outside of the United States once you retire and start relying on medicare for your insurance needs, you are going to need to purchase a Medigap plan so if you have any medical needs while you are traveling, you will not have to pay for them entirely out of your pocket.
Plans That Cover Foreign Travel
There are a few different Medigap plans that will cover your medical expenses if you are injured or need any type of medical care at all when you are traveling outside of the United States.
The Medigap Plans that currently cover foreign emergency care include N, M, G, F, C, and D. These six plans will pay for the medical care you receive when you are outside of the United States. If you like to take cruises, it is important to note that many cruises enter foreign water, where your medical care would not be covered by medicare. If you like to take a lot of cruises, you may want to purchase a Medigap plan as well.
What Is Covered When You Are Outside The United States
These Medigap plans provide you with very similar medical coverage to what you would receive in the United States. First, you will have to pay a small foreign travel deductible for your care, and then after that, your Medigap plan would kick in and pay a set percentage of the rest of your medical costs that you incur while you are out of the country. Make sure that you always have enough money to pay the travel deductible while you are on vacation.
It is important to note that most Medigap plans have a lifetime limit to the amount of coverage that they will provide you with. Be sure to inquire about the lifetime limit before you purchase a plan.
Purchasing Medigap Coverage
With Medigap coverage, it is best to apply during the open enrollment periods. You can apply outside of the open enrollment periods, but when you do so, the insurance provider is allowed to check your health records and decide if they want to take you on as a client. If you think that you will travel outside of the United States within the next year when the open enrollment period rolls around, it is best to apply at that time.
If you are not able to secure Medigap coverage before your foreign travels, you can also purchase supplemental travel insurance that covers medical care. This is a good short-term solution to protect yourself and make sure that you will have access to the medical care that you need when you are outside the United States until you can get enrolled in a Medigap plan.
