Managing Digestive Disorders

My name is Lilith Maclin and if you suffer from a digestive disorder, you can find a wealth of information about this type of medical condition in my blog. Three years ago, my husband was having severe stomach cramps and his doctor told him that he had a digestive disorder called ulcerative colitis. After my husband was diagnosed, I did thorough research to learn how to control and manage this disorder. We kept track of everything that my husband ate and when a certain food caused a flare-up of his condition, he eliminated that food from his diet. By learning all we could about this digestive disorder, my husband has been able to live pain free. If you want more information about this disorder and how to manage it, you can find it here by reading my blog.

2 Types Of Doulas And Their Unique Benefits

Louella Davidson

If you recently found out you are expecting a child, then you may wonder if you should seek the services of a doula. However, like many people today, you may be unsure of exactly how a doula can help you and your child. The truth is that there are several types of doulas, and each helps an expectant and/or new mother in different ways.

Read on to learn about two of the most common doula types and their unique benefits.

Birth Doula

One popular type of doula is a birth doula. A birth doula offers an expectant mother assistance during the last several months of her pregnancy and while she is giving birth.

Typically, a birth doula and an expectant mother begin to meet on a regular basis during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. During these meetings, you can ask your doula any questions you have about giving birth. In addition, your doula will help you form your childbirth plan and make important decisions about your upcoming labor and delivery, such as where you would like to give birth and whether you would like to take pain-relieving medications during delivery or not.

After labor begins, your doula will meet you where you are giving birth. There, they will help communicate your needs to the doctor, nurses, and/or midwife assisting with the labor process, provide emotional support, and provide any other assistance needed to make your childbirth a success.

Postpartum Doula

Another type of doula is a postpartum doula. These doulas assist mothers after they have given birth. While the services that a postpartum doula provides can vary somewhat, these doulas all help a new mother learn how to care for her newborn properly. Lessons a postpartum doula teaches a mother can include how to stimulate natural milk production when breastfeeding, how to prevent diaper rash in her newborn, how to minimize the chance of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and more.

In addition, some postpartum doulas are willing to perform tasks around the house, such as cooking and/or cleaning so the mother can spend more time bonding with her newborn. On the contrary, if a mother had a cesarean section and needs extra help feeding and caring for her infant due to post-C-section pain and/or complications, a doula can perform those tasks, too.

While some postpartum doulas assist a new mother for a few short days, others provide assistance for weeks or even months after giving birth.

If you just found out you are pregnant and want to take all the steps you can to make your pregnancy, labor experience, and postpartum period a great success, then consider enlisting the help of a doula. There are several types of doulas willing to help expectant and new mothers, including birth doulas and postpartum doulas.
